Coffee Without Borders
There is a saying in Turkish, “Bir fincan acı kahvenin kırk yıl hatırı vardır” which translates roughly to “One bitter cup of coffee forms a bond lasting 40 years.“
This Texas documentary unfolds as an exchange between an asylum-seeker from Turkey and the Italian American filmmaker over coffee brewed traditionally in a Turkish ibrik and served in Italian espresso cups. Before the future-telling coffee grounds are reached at the bottom of the cups, told are the bittersweet experiences of leaving home and navigating the intercultural exchanges of a new place and its peoples.
